Boat crossing to Ilha Grande

There is no road link to Ilha Grande, so the only way to get there is by sea. The crossings are made by Flexboat, a fast, safe and comfortable boat, with an experienced crew and certified equipment.

Mangaratiba x Vila do Abraão

This is a less used route to reach Ilha Grande by Flexboat (speedboats). It is better known as the boarding point for those who choose to take the ferry to Ilha Grande.

The ferry is a cheaper option, but the crossing can take more than 1h30. In rough seas, many passengers feel seasick.

Before you book, three details help you choose the crossing:

Where are you coming from? From Rio de Janeiro, Mangaratiba is the closest point. From Paraty or São Paulo, Angra dos Reis is nearer. In Conceição de Jacareí, Marina Porto Real offers the fastest crossing, with the best facilities and comfort

Where are you going on the island? If you are going to Vila do Abraão, you can choose between Porto Real, Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba. Staying in Araçatiba or Praia Vermelha? The direct crossing to those places saves an extra trip afterwards: choose Angra dos Reis.

Crossing time and sea conditions. Boarding at Porto Real, you sail in calmer waters and reach Ilha Grande in just 20 minutes; leaving from Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba, the boats cross open sea, with a longer and rougher trip – 35 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about this crossing

What is the difference between the ferry and the Flexboat?

The public ferry leaves from Mangaratiba and is a cheaper option, but much slower (about 1h30 at sea), sails in open / rough sea (many people feel seasick during the crossing) and runs only once a day. The speedboats (Flexboat) make the trip in a third of the time, have more departure times and allow online booking with a guaranteed seat.

They are also extremely safe, with a fibreglass hull and inflatable sides.

Is the crossing to Ilha Grande safe? Does the boat run in the rain?

Yes. Flexboats are certified by the Brazilian Navy, carry life jackets for every passenger and are operated by experienced sailors. They have a fibreglass hull and inflatable sides, which give stability and safety. They run normally in the rain. In extreme sea conditions, the departure is cancelled for safety and you will be notified immediately.

Do I need to book the crossing in advance?

Yes, always. On public holidays, weekends and in high season, we recommend booking even further ahead. Each boat has a limited number of seats per departure, and they do sell out. When you book online, you get your confirmation right away, then the voucher by e-mail, and you just show it at the pier.

What is the fastest crossing to Ilha Grande?

The fastest is from Conceição de Jacareí (boarding at the Condomínio Porto Real pier) to Vila do Abraão. The Flexboat crossing takes about 20 minutes. From Angra dos Reis or Mangaratiba to Vila do Abraão, the Flexboat takes 35 to 45 minutes on average.
