How it works

How the crossing to Ilha Grande works

Ilha Grande has no bridge or any other way to get there by car.

The only way to reach any part of Ilha Grande is by boat.

You can board in three towns on the mainland:

  • Conceição de Jacareí
  • Angra dos Reis
  • Mangaratiba

Main arrival points on Ilha Grande:

  • Vila do Abraão
  • Araçatiba
  • Praia Vermelha

For other places on the island, you will need a private crossing from the mainland, or a taxi boat from wherever you already are on Ilha Grande.

If you are driving to the crossing point, you can book nearby parking in advance. Payment is made upfront, per day.

Not sure which route to choose? Answer this first

Three simple questions settle most doubts.

Where will you be staying?

If it is Vila do Abraão, any of the routes will take you there. If it is Araçatiba or Praia Vermelha, the only way is through Angra dos Reis.

Where are you coming from?

Coming from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo by road, Conceição de Jacareí is usually the most direct pier. Coming from Angra dos Reis or already staying there, board straight from the town centre.

Would you rather drive or be driven?

If you would rather not drive, park or worry about the car, we have door-to-door transfers from Rio de Janeiro and Paraty, with the boat ticket already included.

The best way to get to Ilha Grande. The boat leaves from the Porto Real pier, which is really easy to find, and in just 20 minutes you are in Abraão.

Ana Paula S. São Paulo

Very well-organised service. I got the QR Code on WhatsApp as soon as I paid, boarded with no hassle and we arrived really fast.

I went with my family for the first time and it was all faster than I imagined. The service was excellent from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions

Still have questions about the crossing?

How do I get to Ilha Grande?

You can only reach Ilha Grande by boat: there is no bridge and no car access. Crossings leave from three points on the mainland: Conceição de Jacareí (the fastest and most comfortable, if you board at Porto Real), Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba. If you are coming from Rio de Janeiro or Paraty, you can book a road transfer + boat crossing and make the whole trip door to door, with no need to worry about driving or parking.

What are the crossing options to Ilha Grande?

There are 2 types of boat, with daily departures. The Flexboat is the fastest and has several departures throughout the day. The public ferry has only 1 departure a day and is the slowest option (it takes 3 times as long as the Flexboat). The choice depends on how much time you want to spend at sea and where you will board. Here you can compare every route, timetable and price in one place.

What is the fastest crossing to Ilha Grande?

The fastest is from Conceição de Jacareí (boarding at the Condomínio Porto Real pier) to Vila do Abraão. The Flexboat crossing takes about 20 minutes. From Angra dos Reis to Vila do Abraão, the Flexboat takes 35 to 45 minutes on average.

What is the difference between the Flexboat and the ferry to Ilha Grande?

The Flexboat is a fast, covered boat that carries 30 to 50 passengers. The ferry is public transport, with a trip of more than an hour and a half and only 1 departure a day, from Mangaratiba. If you want more beach time and a more comfortable crossing, the Flexboat is the best choice.

What time is the last boat to Ilha Grande?

Depending on where you board, the last departure is between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm. If you need to cross outside the regular timetable, you can book a private crossing. To arrange one, talk to an Ilha Grande crossing specialist on our WhatsApp.

Do I need to book the crossing in advance?

Yes, always. On public holidays, weekends and in high season, we recommend booking even further ahead. Each boat has a limited number of seats per departure, and they do sell out. When you book online, you get your confirmation right away, then the voucher by e-mail, and you just show it at the pier.

Where can I leave my car before crossing to Ilha Grande?

You cannot take a car to the island. In Conceição de Jacareí, Condomínio Porto Real has covered parking next to the pier, charged per day. In Angra dos Reis, there are a few car parks near Santa Luzia station, also charged per day. You need to book in advance (talk to a specialist on our WhatsApp to book). Another option is to leave the car at home and take a transfer: you are picked up at your hotel or home and dropped off at the pier in time for boarding.

Is the crossing to Ilha Grande safe? Does the boat run in the rain?

Yes. Flexboats are certified by the Brazilian Navy, carry life jackets for every passenger and are operated by experienced sailors. They have a fibreglass hull and inflatable sides, which give stability and safety. They run normally in the rain. In extreme sea conditions, the departure is cancelled for safety and you will be notified immediately.
